Product Abstract: Originally from Asia, the bergamot tree is now found in Italy and can grow up to 5 meters in hieght. The fruit resembles miniature oranges and has white flowers and thorny branches. The peel of fruit is used to extract essential oil. Cultivated today in the Ivory Coast (not very successfully), Southern Italy (at Bergamot) and the Canary Islands, where it is believed that Christopher Columbus introduced it. It is used as a flavoring in teas. Bergamot is a hybrid of bitter orange and lemon and is believed to act on the hypothalamus.
Cautions: Avoid exposure to sunlight after oil has been applied, as it is phototoxic and attracts the sunlight. Use with caution on people with very sensitive skin. Use in low dilution and always dilute in 5 ml carrier oil first for a bath. Due to the presence of bergaptene in this oil, please consult a physician prior to using it. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
